Name:

Aspidistra atroviolacea Tillich – Feddes Repert. 116(5-6): 317. (2005).

Holotype:

 

From a plant in cultivation at the Botanical Garden Munich (accession-nr. 97/2363), collected by J. BOGNER, March 1997 (BOGNER 2309) in Vietnam, Prov. Thua Thien, Bach Ma, ca. 700 m. TILLICH 4357 (M), including Flowers in the liquid collection at (M).

Specimens:

Paratype: Bogner 2309 (M!). The living plant collected by J. Bogner is in cultivation in the Botanical Garden Munich.

Distribution:

Vietnam: Thua Thien province.

Phenology:

Flowers in greenhouse in March–April..

Rhizome creeping, epigeous, ∅ 8–10 mm, cataphylls dark purple-brown, distally greenish, up to 7 cm long; Petiole 8–16 cm long; Lamina lanceolate, basally cuneate and distally attenuate, decurrent, 18–25 × 3–4.5 cm, uniformly green, midvein adaxially narrowly deepened, abaxially a sharp prominent keel, secondary veins 3 (–4) at each side, between them very fine nerves; Flowers solitary, peduncle 15–25 mm, with 4–5 widely ovate, dark blue-violet cataphylls, perigone campanulate, dark blue-violet, tube 10 mm long, 8 mm wide, lobes 6, narrow triangular, 10 mm long, 5 mm wide, moderately bent outwards, smooth, distally with a narrow, thinned fringe; Stamens 6, very small, 1–1.2 mm long, a little bit below middle of tube; Pistil 10 mm long, ovar inconspicuous, style cylindrical, slender, stigma rounded-triangular to trilobed, ∅ 4 mm, white to pale violet; Fruit globose, mammillate, blackish-purple.
