Aspidistra bicolor Tillich – Feddes Repert. 116(5-6): 317. (2005).

Holotype:

 

From a plant in cultivation at the Botanical Garden Munich (accession-nr. 97/2352), collected by J. Bogner, March 1997 (Bogner 2503) in Vietnam, Prov. Thai Nguyen, Tam Dao. Tillich 4462 (M), including flowers in the liquid collection at (M).

Specimens:

Paratypes: Bogner 2503 (M!), Tillich 4973 (MO!); The plant in cultivation in the Botanical Garden Munich.

Distribution:

Vietnam: Thai Nguyen province.

Phenology:

Flowers in greenhouse in October–December.

Rhizome creeping, epigeous, ∅ 8 mm, cataphylls dark purple, distally greenish, up to 10 cm long; Petiole 20–30 cm; Lamina lanceolate, basally and distally attenuate, decurrent, 25–35 × 5–8 cm, dark green, pale green mottled, midvein adaxially narrowly deepened, abaxially a prominent keel, secondary veins 4–5 at each side, between them very fine nerves; Flowers solitary, peduncle 10–20 mm, with 3–5 widely ovate, acuminate, pale cataphylls, perigone cup-shaped, ∅ 25–35 mm, tube somewhat constricted 2–3 mm above its base, outsides glossy silvery-white, insides blackish purple, ∅ 12–13 mm, 15 mm long, lobes 6, ovoid, reflexed, deep blackish purple, 10–15 mm long, 5–10 mm wide, without keels, basally with 3–4 shallow longitudinal grooves, surface finely shrivelled; Stamens 6, inserted at the constriction of tube, horizontally spreading, pollen sacs oriented downwards; Pistil table-shaped, ovar inconspicuous, style slender, 5–7 mm long, stigma a thin disc, three-armed, white, ∅ 10 mm. Flower very soon collapsing after detachment.
