Name:

Aspidistra geastrum Tillich – Feddes Repert. 116(5-6): 319. (2005).

Holotype:

 

From a plant in cultivation at the Botanical Garden Munich (accession-nr. 97/2383), collected by J. Bogner, March 1997 (Bogner 2302) in Vietnam, Prov. Thua Thien, Bach Ma. Tillich 4598 (M), including flowers in the liquid collection at (M).

Specimens:

 

Paratypes: Bogner 2497 (M), Tillich 4960 (MO); Vietnam, Bach Ma, ca. 800 m, March 11/1997, Bogner 2302 (M); Vietnam, Bach Ma, ca. 700 m, March 12/1997, Bogner 2311 (M).

Flowers in cultivation in February–March.

Description

Rhizome epigeous, ∅ 7–10 mm, cataphylls red-brown, up to 7 cm long, soon drying; Petiole 2–10 cm; Lamina widely lanceolate, 20–30 × 6–9 cm, base cuneate, somewhat decurrent, uniformly green, relatively thick, midrib notched adaxially, protruding as a sharp keel abaxially; Flowers solitary, peduncle 0.5–1 cm long, with a few small, pale cataphylls; perigone divided nearly to base, lobes 8 (–9), brown-red upsides, green outsides, narrow lineate, divaricate, 20 mm long, margins revolute, adaxial surface finely rugose, on lower third with two low keels; Stamens 8, at base of tube, filaments 1 mm, anthers ovoid, 2 mm long; Pistil mushroom-shaped, 9 mm long, ovar indistinct, style 4–5 mm long, stigma hemispherical, brown-red, ∅ 9 mm, surface finely rugose.
