Name:

Aspidistra marasmioides Tillich – Feddes Repert. 116(5-6): 321. (2005).

Holotype:

 

From a plant in cultivation at the Botanical Garden Munich (accession-nr. 96/3118), collected by N. Arnautov (Arnautov 88–117) in Vietnam, Prov. Hai Phong, Cat Hai. Tillich 4458 (M).

Vietnam, Hai Phong province (Cat Hai, Cat Ba Island).

Phenology:

Flowers in October–November in nature, in November–December in greenhouse.

Rhizome slender, widely creeping and freely branching, ∅ 4 mm, imbricately covered with small, brown cataphylls; Petiole 10–15 cm long, ∅ 2 mm; Lamina elliptic, 10–12 cm long and 5 cm wide, dull green with small pale green dots, base cuneate to truncate, somewhat decurrent, apex cuspidate, at both sides of midrib 3–4 secondary veins, between them 4 very fine tertiary veins; Flowers solitary, peduncle 2–3 cm long, purple, with 5–7 purple, elliptic-cuspidate cataphylls, perigone cupulate, 12 mm long and 15 mm wide, with 6 lobes, tube outsides white, insides and the lobes purple, lobes reflexed, smooth; Stamens 6, at middle height of tube, filament 1 mm, anthers ovoid, 2–2.5 mm long, pollen sacs oriented downwards; Pistil delicate, mushroom-shaped, 11 mm long, somewhat exceeding the tube, ovar inconspicuous, hardly wider than the style, style slender, 6 mm long, stigma hemispherical, ∅ 6 mm, 3 mm high, surface smooth, pale pink.
