Name:

Aspidistra opaca Tillich – Feddes Repert. 116(5-6): 321. (2005).

Holotype:

 

From a plant in cultivation at the Botanical Garden Munich (accession-nr. 97/2359), collected by J. Bogner, March 1997 (Bogner 2491) in Vietnam, Prov. Khanh Hoa, Khan Nam (ca. 35 km W of Nha Trang). Tillich 4468 (M), including flowers in the liquid collection at (M).

Specimens:

Paratypes: Bogner 2491, 3 sheets (M); Tillich 4965 (LE); Tillich 4964 (MO); The plant in cultivation at the Botanical Garden Munich.

Distribution:

Vietnam: Khanh Hoa province.

Phenology:

Rhizome epigeous to nearly hypogeous, ∅ 8–10 mm, cataphylls brown, distal greenish, up to 5 cm long; Petiole 10–18 cm; Lamina lanceolate to ovate-lanceolate, 25–30 × 5–9 cm, base cuneate, somewhat decurrent, uniformly green, midvein adaxially somewhat deepened, abaxially prominent, secondary veins 3–4 at each side, between them 7–9 very fine nerves; Flowers crowded, subsessile, perigone 10 mm high, ∅ 20 mm, tube widely bowlshaped, lobes 6, reflexed, deltoid, lobes and tube insides dull purple, outsides dull-green, red mottled; Stamens 6, at base of tube, anthers subsessile, 2–2.5 mm long; Pistil table-shaped, ovar inconspicuous, style very short, ca. 2 mm, stigma circular, disc-shaped, white, ∅ 10 mm, surface smoth, with repeatedly bifurcated radial lines.
